Here is a link to alternative fuels and thier prospective price points that was published in a recent Wired Magazine article.  Coal to Liquid sounds like the most promising target fuel alternative for the near future.  Like tar sands, the extraction effort requires significant amounts of power.  Looks like this makes a good case for Nuclear energy.  Nuclear provides a way to get significant amounts of energy on the grid to transfer these fuels to a form that we can consume.
